Explain: Cold SO2 tires hard when cold... Why do they still pick up rocks like glue?

If SO2 tires lose all grip down around freezing temperatures, how come they pick up rocks as if they are hot and sticky? I'll drive off when the car is dead cold in the morning, and all these cinders are flinged everywhere!

Hahah. I purchased this car in December, and never drove it with S-02's installed. Finally had them installed yesterday. I was thinking the same thing when I got to work this morning (it was barely above freezing this morning, and I drove my car very gentle to work, as I also just had the clutch replaced for the TSB).
There are little rocks stuck to my tires! not in the grooves, on the surface of the tires! Its crazy.
But I must say even when cold, these tires are awesome!!

You should see my garage floor in the winter time. They put sand on the roads around here when it's slick outside and I think that half of it winds up in my garage. My new tires (Kumho's) do that, also.

The tires will heat up as you drive them even when it is cold outside. Plus you have the weight of the car pushing against the rocks so the will stick in the rubber some.
