You can run non staggered, but If your friend did not have them on an S2000 it is very likely they wont work.
A couple of questions would help us answer your question. What kind of car were they on? What is the size width an offset of the wheels? What do you plan on doing with the car i.e. Track, auto-cross, canyons, non of the above?

What about guy running 9" wide wheels all around? I think cars like the J's s2000's run those setups. I think it's just tougher to fit those wide front tires with the stock fenders.

It's not that you can't do it, but, people that do it are either doing it for a specific handling/track reason or because they don't know any better and want to get some nice looking wheels and don't want to spend the money on an expensive s2k setup.
Unless you KNOW what you are doing, don't cheap out. You can sell your stock wheels for 400 and a nice set of used lightweight wheels can be had for only a thousand more. Save up and get the nice wheels

It can be done as stated above, but it will perform differently.

If Iwere to personally run this non-staggered setup, I would do it with a specific purpose and that purpose would be handling related. I really do not believe that setup changes such as the one being contemplated should be created to enhance aesthetics. Too many people focus on aesthetics as opposed to more important factors such as the potential effects of their setup changes.
Setup changes affect handling and these changes can prove dangerous to a driver focused on the lesser important characteristics and neglecting to focus upon those which truly matter.
When in doubt, heir on the side of safety especially if you DRIVE your S.

if you want to run non-staggered you have to setup the car to run non-staggered. you can't just slap them on and hope for the best because the car will behave much differently when pushed to the limit.. the good thing is. it will only behave differently WHEN pushed.
