Comparing a 285 tire to a stock 245 tire, talk about W I D E ! !

This is breaking news?!
285's are still for kids 17/11.5" +63 295's are proper on a stock body S. Sorry had to do it

Good compound wider tires are not just for high hp strait line traction, these will give you better cornering grip and braking. Yes, more rubber on the ground in the S is better. I can attest to a much improved "planted" car as well, in an otherwise nervous handling ride with average size tires. I contribute a wider wheel offset in combination to the rubber size as the reason for this improvement.

If you want a true comparison- compare it to a tire other than a star spec. They run wide, they are closer to a 255 than a 245. I am running a 265 star spec on mine and it looks a decent amount larger so a 285 must be really nice. What offset are you running? +70-75?
I looked into this for the 10" 6ULRs, but the problem has been you can either get a top street tire in 255 or 265, or you can get a 2nd rate tire in 285. I'm not sure you gain enough by going to 285 to make up for having to use a crappier tire. If you're running R comps, you can get 285s, but I've read about people having trouble getting 285 R-comps up to temperature with the S2000's weight and power level.
Give me an RS-3 or Star Spec in 285 and now we're talking!

Well this car has a SOS supercharger setup and can easily break the 245 tires loose so hoping the 285's will give a bit more grip. Hoping to hit 380+ rwhp once we get it back to the tuner. Fronts are 225/40/18's on a 8" rim so very conservative.
If you're hardparking it, then I understand why you'd want to go wide regardless of tire.

Not the greatest picture but this is with virtually no camber as you can see:

^Yes it's a 18x10.5" custom wheel with a very high offset!
We are running Endless Zeal coilovers with no fender modifications besides the rear tab re-located.
here's a better shot with the full car:
