One of the things you have to be careful with is that the real spec for the total width of the tire isn't the treadwidth but instead the sometimes not published section width. That is the widest part of the tire sidewall. Tirerack and most sites publish that for their tires.

Plus, to make things worse, you can't really even compare one vendors 225 to another vendors 225 and assume they are the same treadwidth either.

Anyone that's laid a 225 hoosier next to a 225 toyo (for example) will see the hoosier is *way* wider both in treadwidth and section width. Go figure.

So go to the reputable websites that have the tires you currently have, and the ones you want to buy. Then compare the section widths and see what the difference is. Divide by 2 (1/2 for each side) then do some measuring on your car. Make sure you have the extra clearance on the inside (to the shock tower) and on the outside (fender).
