Your numbers make zero sense!
Sidewalls for 225/40-17 will be shorter than 225/45-17 by .05*225mm, or 11.25mm, just under 1/2". Difference in diameter will(obviously!) be twice this amount, or just under an inch.
Agree with the point regarding running compatible front/rear tires.

Q for op: what make and specific model tire are youfinding in225/40-17, and what make/specific model and size rears would you be running them with?

these are Bridgestone LM-60s winter tires. rear tires are stock size 245/40/17. its a set from a different car so fronts are 40s

I am a bit concerned about front gap. I dont want the car to look weird. I just have no idea how 225/40s would look vs 215/45s

ps. i obviously dont care about 225 vs 215, its 40 that worries me.

Oh ok, these are only for winter season? Well, as I was trying to explain up above, but poorly:

A 215/45 has a 96.75 mm (215*.45) sidewall height, and the 225/40 (225*.40) has a 90mm sidewall...so about 13.5 mm less overall diameter. An inch is 25.4 mm, so it's somewhere around 1/2" less overall diameter.

If they are a really great deal I might do it if it's only for light winter driving, what do you think ZDan?

I suppose the difference in height rear vs front, stock only 2.5mm, and 10.5mm in CR, with that setup it will be 16mm....am i going to see that 0.6 inches difference ?

Hold on.....there is only 2 tires that come in 225/40/17 lol......this must be a mistake and tires are 225/45/17. i will find out.....

I would also not run 225/40R17 on the car. They would not match up well with the rear tires and they would be 6/10" shorter than the stock front tires. With a 245/40R17 rear you can throw off the anti lock brakes.
