direct fit with +1 diameter
To compare just the rears, the tire specs I have show the 245/40WR17 RE50s to have a diameter of 24.6 inches, while the 225/50WR16 SO2s have an overall diameter of 24.8 inches.
With the 2006 tires and rims I am gaining a half inch more rubber on the ground in the rear while losing .4 inches of tread width in the front (SO2 front tread width 7.1 inch/ rear 8.5 inch, RE50 front 6.7 inch/rear tread width 9.0 inch).
This looks to me to be a setup that's going to give me a little "push" or understeer and maybe lessen the S2000's dramatic lift throttle oversteer characteristics. Comments?

Thanks, but do you mean a + 1 rim increase in diameter, but a decrease of .2 inches in overall diameter?

The 17" OEM tire is 245 sized in rear, but this coincides well with the 16" OEM rear tire at 225 sizing. Explanation ...................................>>

Thanks, I get it, but he did say diameter.
Now for my observations about the change.
The good news with the 2006 setup is that there is no bump steer, clearances are good and the lower profile tires didn't make the already harsh ride noticably harsher.
The sorta bad news is that the RE50s don't give the precise turn-in that the SO2s did and the half inch wider rears are no stickier than the 16 inch SO2s they replaced. The sorta good news about that is that without the precise turn-in I'm less likely to get into those situations where I need the stickier rears.
Next time I'll try SO3s.
