Do you guys think that will work in the front? The car is lowered, but is on coilovers, so I could always raise it up a bit if needed.

OK, I'll bite. If it's in the rim width range listed on the tire specs then you're safe for sure. It it's a half inch or two out of the range, then it could work but you're on your own. To answer your question specific to the 225/45/17, most tires have the upper limit of the rim width range at 8.5" so you should be OK.
My question is: Why?

Gotte be carefull. On my old ssr's i had 18x8.5 +68 with a 225 tire. And since it was an 18" tire that ment lower profile (which is better to avoid rubbing.) I still managed to catch the front fenders. Of course this was all because I was exteremly low. So becarefull with how high/low the car is.

run some extra negative camber... -1 to -1.5 in the front you should be fine with the +54

I hate to say it, but you will RUB if your running stock alignment man.
If you do indeed run some negative camber, you will be a-OK, but for that size and offset, your best bet is running a 215 for maximum clearance.
Think about it this way. The Volk CE28 guys, running the infamous 17x9 +63 R, 17x7.5 +50 F, combo with the 255/225 set up, there have been many issues where the the 225 will pull the fender lip when hitting bump/turning hard/going uphill etc.
With your 8.5 + 54, you are technically, 20mm's more aggressive then the Standard CE fitment, and would be sticking out at least almost and inch. Sure you can do a 225, but dropping the car to the desired ride heighth is a no no.
Negative Camber is your friend although, premature tire ware is a bitch. lol
