Default 17" Tire Sizing

Can anyone help me with wheel diameter and tire sizing for 17" rims? I'm getting some mixed msgs...on TireRack, they suggest 205/50/17 and 225/45/17, while some people I know are running 225/50/17 and 245/45/17...I'm looking for the closest fit to the stock diameter, but I know it won't be exact, so I'd rather it smaller than bigger of the stock diameter.

Thanks in advance for any info!

Rich for stock diameters and stock width ratio between frt/rear you should use 205/50-17's and 245/40-17's. Both rolling radii are within 1% of stock, the rears being slightly smaller than stock (incase you were wanting to split some gearing hairs).

I don't know what the FAQ lists, but the correct sizes in 18" are:
225/40-18 frt
285/30-18 rear
but you're not going to find any reasonably priced wheels that can handle those (the correct) sizes. Go with 17's unless you can afford to go nutty.

so you should not go with:
225/40-18 Fronts
+
255/35-18 Rears
then?

Is that right, what would that setup effect, would the handling and traction be bad?
There are several people on here running it, perhaps some comments from you about the differences over stock.

It boils down to keeping the rears about 25% wider than the fronts.
RT -- are you coming from a pure performance point of view when you say the rears should be 25% bigger than the fronts? I'm running with 255/35/18 rears with no issues in terms of rubbing etc....I was also told that this sizing keeps closest to the stock diameter sizing.
