Looking for a diesel vehicle
Needs to be a diesel truck. If it's used, I can do with $5k. New, I don't know what's new out there that's good. But definitely not too expensive. Not sure about a price for a new one.
Please give suggestions. I don't really have much direction other than it needs to be good (reliable) and be a pick up truck.
I know this is totally without specific guidelines, but I have no clue right now. That's why I'm depending on you guys! Thanks.

Please tell us why you NEED a diesel. Are you towing an enclosed trailer or a 5th wheel. Do you REALLY need 12500 lbs of towing capacity?
You need to narrow down your price range. $5k used to whatever new is a big stretch. A new F250 TD goes for $50k+. The 2007 MY low sulfur diesels cost $4k more than than their last year versions. So the smart choice would be to bo with pre 2006 models. I personally feel that the GM duramax is a bit better quality than the Ford International TD. The Ford TD is known to expensive to repair and maintain. However, the Ford has a better interior, a more comfortable ride, and is a great al around vehicle. I tow with my friends F250 TD and we used it to tow my spec miata and my NSX on a 2600 lbs aluminum 2 car trailer 2 weeks ago. Total weight was 7800 lbs and the truck pulled like a gem. We averaged 14 MPG during the trip.

This car is for my dad. He is a diesel truck mechanic. He just wants a diesel vehicle. I think a truck is not a big deal, but preferable, because he just sold his pickup. Thus, he can get both in one shot, but a diesel car will be fine. His main prerogative is a diesel engine.
A TDI would be great if they still made them. Can't seem to find a low mileage one in the area.
Looking at the car manufacturer websites, the diesel trucks are expensive. I was hoping for around $20k, not $35k+.
