they put a stick (broomstick as an example) extending from the top of the rollbar to the A-pillar frame. If your head is under this, you are fine. If not, then your head will land first in a rollover, and we all wouldnt want to see that.

As has been discussed, the cusco roll bar is more of a show piece. What makes a roll bar SCCA/Solo legal is diameter/gage of the pipe and size of the feet which have to be welded. I currently have a hard dog SOLO 1 roll bar installed in my car and there is a large difference between it and a cusco bar.
If you are just looking to go out on track I believe all local clubs allow the stock roll hoops. But anything involving Solo 1 or higher requires a serious bar.
