Default gear shifting problem

since i am new to my s, iam not sure if thoes are normal.

1. shift from first gear to second gear, i need to release my clutch slowly or shift at high rpm (4500+) to make my car going "smooth".

2.shift from 4 to 5 gear, i get the similar problem..

3. when i drive my frd's civic si, i feel that si's shifting are much more smooth (more like butter??). is it due to the different style??

thanks in advance

i think you just need to get used to it and play around with the clutch a bit more, see where the sweet spot or the engagement points are. So...yes it is normal. When i change my shoes from shox -> chuck's, i usually need to get used to the clutch play because of the difference in thickness of the sole. So yeah just get used to it, and you'll be fine...

be sure to attend upcoming meets!

Rays right just be more gentle with your clutch/footwork.

First -> Second will always require the most practice to be 'smooth'
You don't need to shift at 4500rpm to be 'smooth,' just practice.

Normal behaviour. You will get used to it.

Hmm, it might be normal, but there's a chance something is wrong. I see by your profile that you have a MY 2000. Apparently some AP1s had issues with 2nd gear grinding (there's a TSB about this in Under the Hood). Is there audible grinding when you change gears or just a notchy sort of feel? Either way, I'd try a transmission fluid change if you haven't done one recently.

Also, you could come out to some meets and have another s2k owner drive your car to determine if it is shifting normally.

2nd gear grind in early ap1's is when you are shifting hard.

normal 1st-2nd shifts are hardest ones to make smooth- just takes practise...

so go out and drive

Yeah, I get the exact same problem. It's fine once it's warmed up though, just the first Km or few.

1st to 2nd is the hardest to get smooth but once you get it, it will come naturally. Find the friction point then you'll get it every time.

I've been a passenger in some cars where the driver doesn't care if 1st to 2nd is smooth and it makes the ride very uncomfortable.
You don't have to let off the clutch slowly, just do as you normally would and add gas faster. Should be one smooth motion. Good luck!
