Default Bad timing to buy S2K

Man I've been slowly looking at the ads for s2k the last 1.5-2months because I'll be in the market to buy one in about 3-4 weeks. In the beginning I still see ap1's for around $11k and ap2's for 15k, but now it's dried up and only see ap1's for around $20k lately!! Yikes!! I know it's mainly because it's summer now and partly because demand for this great vehicle will continue to rise. But goddammit, the local prices have been crazy lately, think Ima have to go out of province to buy one, prices are still much more decent from what I can see....or think might go for a Boxster instead. But my first choice is still to get a local s2k that's stock with low kilometres for $10-15k in a little while

Seasonal variation aside, I think this might be the new norm. The S is getting scarce, with it's known reliability and classic looks I think they will retain their value for a while; it seems it's no cheaper buying them in the sates now (especially at the current exchange rate). A Boxster is nice, but they'll depreciate a lot faster than an S and the reliability for the earlier models are questionable, not to mention the difficulty in working on them and the high price of parts. The new ones are soooo much nicer, but unfortunately will cost and arm and a leg. Good luck finding one!

Thnx man, Yeah besides what a great sports car the s2k is, the pure design of its style, and reliability is what makes it at the top of my list. Yup, like u said, the cost of parts and maintenance compared to the boxster is much lower. If I do get a Boxster, I'll most likely switch to the s2k couple years down the road anyway because that's the keeper I really want. From the way things look, it's most likely winter time before I can find more s2k up for sale at more reasonable prices, right now it seems everybody and their mom wants one lol

I find it interesting to look at the sometimes-strange design changes of roadsters over the past few years, but still the S2000 has classic good looks that remain so attractive. The design of the car can rightly be called timeless, with clean lines and an aggressive appearance. To top it all off, this is a pure, raw sports car in every sense, not burdened with a ton of fluffy features. Just damn fine engineering.

I recently read somewhere that the S2000 is considered the most reliable sports car ever made. It's a Honda ... what else would one expect?

I agree, prices are crazy right now. But I think you should still expect to pay slightly more than 15k for a low mileage, clean example. Waiting till the summer is over is probably a good idea.

Hope you find one soon though!

Definitely! It is becoming near impossible to find low mileage, clean history, and stock or fairly stock s2ks now. And they are definitely significantly more expensive than others. Imo $10-15k is a little low to find a clean one. In the winter when I was looking, 10k would get you a high mileage, rebuilt, early ap1 00 or 01; one of the "kingsway" special types. Around $15k would get you into an 02-03 ap1 with higher mileage with a accident/claim or two. Good ukc on your search!

MAybe I got in at just the right time here in the US last year! Mine had more than one previous owner, but I knew the guy I bought from through our local autox club. Barely over 100,000 miles, a pile of spare parts (brand new Honda OEM parts as well as used parts like a diff, axles, steering wheel, set of konis, etc) came with it, soft top was replaced the year before I bought it. While I will not go into specific numbers, I spent closer to 10k than 15k for it (US dollars).

Its funny, because I had always liked the S2k, but was not out looking and didnt even plan on buying a car right then. He had it up for a while and told me to come look just for the hell of it ... threw the keys to me and told me and my wife to take it out and drive it for a while ... when we pulled into his garage again she looked at me and said "we are buying another car arent we?" Super glad I got it when I did.

I think as more of them get thrashed, wrecked, etc and even more get molested into riceland to the point many would not buy them ... the price will continue to rise on them. They are fun street cars, awesome autox and track cars, respond well to modifications, are relatively cheap and are reliable. Hard to find that in many sports cars.

Yeah just about every comparison tests I've ever seen or read in magazines, the s2000 has always came out on top. This machine is king...even recently seen a comparo with an '04 s2k against brand new cars like the brz and it still won. It's amazing how well Honda made this car that a 10yr+ car is still better than other new sporty cars. It's definitely a future classic and demand will just keep going up as more and more ppl realize how good it is and on top of everything, is reliable and inexpensive to maintain. And I don't see these cars depreciating much anymore, if anything, prices are going to go up in the next few years. I might have to bite the bullet and pay a bit more for a low mileage and relatively unmolested s2k the next little while. Well I don't mind some mods actually because I plan on doing some upgrades down the road, as long as the engine is stock.

The thing to keep in mind about s2k's from the states is that one's from hot sunny states will often be in worse condition than another one of similar age and mileage from cooler areas. The sun's uv rays do a lot of damage.
