Holly S__t! They are equiped with anti-theft devices. Imobilizer is supposed to turn on when the key is not present. They must have known what they were doing. Why the "F" would they torch it. Must have been to get rid of evidence. Sounds like a scene right out of a movie like "Heat".

An immobilizer doesn't stop a flat-bed tow truck. I hope there is an especially warm place in hell for thieves.

as far as i know, it's almost impossible to start, but you could always cut the top, put it in neutral, and take off the brake.

it's only a $30k car these days, so i think that's the best thing going for it. why not spend your time stealing something more expensive?

Like 5-10k Civics (that I think, and bet, are still the most stolen car). IF they are stealing them for money, its all about A) Supply and demand (more ghetto ricers need parts for their civics than s2000s, and more so for cheaper cars than more expensive cars) and B) Risk/cost vs profit. In your basic theif's mind it is less risky, and probably cheaper/easier generally, to steal something cheaper than something more expensive. Plus something more expensive is always more likely to have stronger anti-theft device/s.

Someone broke into my Evo forever ago, hopefully he was too dumb to get the word out, but like the older s2ks (dunno about the newer ones) it had no alarm at all, just the immobilizer.

Now I've got a car with infrared motion sensors

More than likely someone stole it for a joy ride, in which case you're more right suggesting stealing something more expensive, but would it be worth the higher risk?
