I will try to make it out tonight to this one. I definatly won't make it to the BBQ meet. I am 70% to go.

In the past, if someone wasn't sure, or if they were surely not going to make it, they just didn't post until they were sure they could go.
It gave whoever organized the event a for sure count of what to tell the person who sits the group. It also gives more of a positive look on the thread to those who are about to sign up...rather than seeing negatives.
Example, if 10 people post up that they cannot make the meet and 3 post up to say that they can, what good does that do for the 3 or for others that may sign up to go to the meet. It's kind of like what happened in the Korean BBQ thread. Enough people didn't commit (or committed and then backed out), so the organizer backed out on the meet. Fortunately, the 4 or 5 that were committed to going decided they still wanted to go. As you see, that meet is still a go. These are small things that were learned in the past when meets were being organized that should still take place now...regardless of who's organizing.
Now don't take what I'm writing here as a personal attack on anyone, as me trying to be a leader, or anything else. It's just something I'm sharing from things that were learned in the past 5 years of organizing and attending meets, gatherings, and events.
