stores for helmets
i just registered for the beginner driving school at rt. 66 for the end of this month.
it states that they will have helments there for those that do not have any but i would rather have my own.
any store/shops in or around the chicago area that hve helments in stock that i can try on before i buy?
i dont wanna take a chance and order one to find out it doesnt fit right.
also, open faced helments are safer in airbag equiped cars correct?

Most motorcycle shops will not have SA rated helmets (needed for most car based track events.) Some auto-x events will allow M rated (motorcycle) helmets, but if you want to do track days, you WILL need an SA rated helmet.
For instock purchase, you should check out Northstar Motorsports. http://www.northstarmotorsports.com/
They stock several types, and all sizes of SA helmets. Expect prices to start at $300 and go up from there.

I agree with Pete. I bought mine from Northstar. They actually steered me to a better fitting helmet when I arrived at the store. Very knowlegable.

SA is special application, or basically, racing helmet. They are rated to a spec that is revised every 5 years. SA95, SA2000, SA2005, etc. Most places are starting to look for SA2000 and newer. I suspect SA95s will be disallowed this year by most sanctioning bodies.
M is for motorcycle helmets.
