Default Sales tax law in Michigan when buying used car?

in Maryland, we filled out a "Bill of Sale" and wrote the selling price and got it notarized. So i'd ask the seller to write down a lower price to pay less tax.

In michigan, does it work the same way? or do they go by the book value to compute the 6% tax?

The buyer will advice the MI Sec of State's office of the purchase price when filing for the title transfer. The stated amount should be the actual price paid, but more often than not, it is a lower amount that the buyer and seller have previously agreed to report.
