170 entrants is extreme, go to the smaller clubs, get more runs and more fun.

which smaller clubs would these be? i think TSSCC events averaged around 100 entrants per event last year, we got the same number of runs as Chicago SCCA events.
The larger clubs also get larger sites, I've seen one smaller club (Salt Creek i think) that runs at Maywood, a tiny seal coated lot I've run at before and wouldn't plan on going back. I'd rather have 6 runs at Rt. 66 than 12 runs at Maywood.

I think there used to be a MAX of 60-70 cars.
I'm planning on driving down for a few auto X's this year if anyone is interested.

I've never done an auto-x but have observed it. So, I can't comment on comparing HPDE to auto-x and will not try to do so.
My view is that once you have invested the money, time and effort that it takes to learn road track driving, your only reason for being there IS TO TAKE THE RISK and find a way to go faster. Self-preservation is not a factor. It is anathema.
Having said that, I have never been able to get rid of self-preservation at Road America. Accordingly, I don't go there for HPDE anymore (well, maybe not).

I've done both HPDE and auto-x and they are really two different things. I found you have much less time to react while Auto-x'ing. It is unbelievably fast paced. I also found that on the track I have the opportunity to emphasize smooth driving, heal-toe, and etc. I really appreciate them both for different things. My budget is more tuned for auto-x'ing at this time so I'm likely to stick w/ that to get my thrills for a while.

One advantage of going to an event with many entries, is you get to see many cars run many times, giving you the chance to learn the course and techniques by observation too.
While it's true, there is less driving time in an autox vs. tracking the car I have alot of fun working too. It can be fun backseat driving working a corner. I guess like any activity, some will enjoy it and some will not.
One thing I do know, I don't go to the bowling forums/threads and say how much I don't like bowling. If they enjoy bowling cool, more power to them.
