I got the rain gaurds with mine. I have NEVER installed them. Mind you since i've had my hard top on i've gone through the touchless wash. No adverse effects whatsoever.
Oh, I have a Top Secret hood.

My hood didn't come with any rain guards, I think Lee's did but he removed them and stuck them in the basement. If you install the rainguards it blocks off the vent completely.
When I wash the car, I put small towels over the vents to keep water from getting under the hood. Of course, there really isn't anything that will be hurt under the hood, I just don't want to have to detail the engine bay everytime I wash the car.
I have driven the car in rain, and parked in rain without issue.

Depends on the manufacturer of your hood. Seibon doesn't make rainguards. I have the Seibon Mugen Style CF hood. I am not worried about water getting in the engine bay because whatever water does get in there will be very minimal. I've driven my S in the rain, and of course get it washed. When I have it washed, I ask them to spray in the opposite direction of the vents.

Mugen hood comes with "gutters" built into the structure of the hood. Even with the car standing in the rain, engine does NOT get wet. You get the benefits of venting AND a dry engine bay.
