Question
How is it going guys? Im taking a trip up to Detroit for christmas only problem is were driving. I'd rather fly but the wife is scared to fly so we have to drive. I was wondering if anyone knew how the road conditions are through I40 (catching I40 in amarillo), I44, I55, and I94. Are the roads generally keep clean or should I bring some snow chains. I will be driving my MDX and leaving Ruidoso, NM on the 22nd. Thanks for any help guys.

They generally do a pretty good job of keeping the roads clear of snow and ice, except during a weather event, at which time you may find only one lane (on a multiple lane freeway) being used. Be carefull around the south shore of Lake Michigan (I-94), snow can become very heavy at times, with low visibility. Best wishes for a safe trip and a nice visit to the Great Lake State.
Oh!, for the wife... Give her some dramamine and valium, relax and enjoy the "extra" time you have bought by flying.
Certainly don't mean to spoil your trip, but your wife should consider this; it's a fact that the chances of being involved in an aircraft accident are about 1 in 11 million as opposed to being killed in an automobile accident (about 1 in 5000). Statistically, you are at far greater risk driving to the airport than getting on an airplane. The perception is that you have more control over your fate when you are in your car than as a passenger traveling on an airplane. Statistics show otherwise, somewhere around 50,000 people are killed on the highways annually. Fear of flying can be conquered

Thanks guys for all of the help. I only asked about the chains because i live in a mountain town and chains are required during heavy winter time currently we are in the 50's which is wonderful! Its just that watching all of the snow and ice thats been on the east has put me a little extra precautious. TYM2FLY, yes she really does need to learn to fly. She flew for the first time last year and beause of some spring winds the landings scared her, well they scared me too (lol). Anyway she feels more "in control" driving but I've told her that we cant control others abilities. Again thanks guys, have a safe and happy holidays.
