Might be moving to Detroit
Hey all,
There is a 50/50 chance I'm moving to Detroit in about two weeks. I also just got a new S2000 (before this opportunity came along). Does anyone have any thoughts on these questions?
1.) How safe is it for an S2000 in the city of the Big 3?
2.) Would you recommend getting a "beater" car?
3.) Any recommendations on apartments in the Southfield/Farmington general areas?
My biggest concern is this, my primary account would be GM, and driving an S2000 there might not be in my best interests. But I want to avoid selling it at all costs, because this car is a gem....
Any thoughts, comments, smart remarks? Thanks for your help!

Well, winter can suck with an S2000. It can be done, but it can suck too. A beater is not a bad option. Given your customer is GM, it would stand to reason that while they may not make any overt comments, it certainly is not going to ingraciate you to them.
Seems like a GM of some sort may be in your future.

Just pick up an old gm truck.
I recommend a beater because sometimes the winter here gets nasty and the road commission albeit good sometimes doesnt get the roads cleared when you might need it.
I'll be picking one up soon as I sold my second car to my sister. My S gets stored n a garage for the winter.
Oh and I'm a uaw member ,granted I work at Visteon; a sort of impartial company now, and all I get are compliments for guys I work with at the plant.
but for god sakes dont get rid of the s2000!

Well i work for Johnson Controls and all i get are compliments , but then again, everyone is different, but you should not have a problem.
You should defenitly get a beater preferably a pickup truck, to be high of the ground and have 4x4 because people here during winter CAN NOT drive!!
Good Luck
p.s. i live in farmington hills, and southfield is my neighbor and what is your oprice range for a place, are you lookin for a apartment or condo, or home?

Trust me... drive into a Ford Plant parking lot... and you see Saturn's, Pontiac's and Chevy's...
Drive into a GM parking lot... and you get Fords, Lincolns and Mazda's...
trust me... no one cares around here... many don't make enough money, or get good enough discounts on their cars TO care!
You will not see disrespect for your car- unless you try to hang at the dreamcruise... then your import is just begging for it!
(and unless you are one hell of a driver on a low to the ground, rear wheel drive car, in the snow... get a winter beater!)

Thanks for the feedback! If I do this, I think a 4WD truck is in my future. So far from what I've seen having an S2000 isn't going to be a problem as long as it isn't snow.
What amazed me was the amount of new corvettes around here, and they look pretty sharp too. Maybe when I make my billions I'll get one of those too......
