Default MI electronic help (hardwiring radar detector)

Any one around the Metro Detroit area any good with electronic work?

I got an Escort Passport 9500ix in time for my upcoming trip to Florida (first week of March), and the escort-made hardwire kit recently. I would like to hardwire it, and despite my searches in the electronics forum (most are old and and the pics are expired) and the help here: http://s2000.org/mods/radar/ , I'm still worried a MY04 might be different than a MY00-03 (only ones that are pictured). This should surely be an easy operation to perform, but I want to make sure I do it right the first time.

Any help would be much appreciated and I'm willing to drive out to whereever someone might be able to help if possible.

If I knew I would be glad to help out. I've always gone to a stereo shop to have those hardwired in.

Hardwiring radar detectors really isn't difficult. Actually the first diy project I took on myself for a car. Good place to get your feet wet (not literally because you're dealing with electricity ).

And I don't think there are any differences on an 04. I was planning on hardwiring my radar detector on the CR this weekend. I can let you know if there is anything different then my AP1.

You don't really have to remove the visor, like the instructions suggest - I just stuff it in the tiny gap at the top of the windsheild. Removing the A pillar is easy. Then the other 2 things you have to do is plug it into the fuse box and ground the other wire. The detailed instructions are nice, but don't be fooled - it really is a 2 step process.

Marc, I have very limited experience (my creds include installing a head unit in my CRX, installing a dension iPod link in my Audi, and installing a USA spec ipod link in my S2000); however, I feel pretty comfortable with in-car-electronics (at least on my own vehicles).

Not only that, but soon I will be doing some type of hardwire for a GPS in my S2000. Since I'm sure that's not gonna end up being all that different from your radar detector; maybe we could help eachother out. My GPS comes in on Monday; so the soonest I might be ready is next weekend. At the very least, I will post pics of whatever I do, and it might help you out.

Wow. That's a lot more involved then my install. Personally, I don't like splicing oem wires.

However, being able to kill the detector from the window lock switch was a good idea!

J5 - thats an amazing how-to! thanks for taking the time to make it.
i do have to agree that while it's cool and surely will be used many times over... I don't want to do anything that tricky/time consuming.

Kamron - thanx for the offer and I may just have to take you up on this. as i said in my OP - this surely can't be too difficult and should be somewhat quick. I just don't want to mess anything up of course. Also, it sounds like u have a lot more experience than I! If you help me, I'll surely help you in whatever way I can.

thanx for the advice patinum! I might have to snoop around the S tomorrow a little bit to get a better idea of just how easy or hard this could be.

There is no change for the wiring from an AP1 to an AP2. (not any that would affect that for sure.)

It's only two wires to hook up. You can DO IT!

^lol OK OK! since ur making me look like the noob i am...i guess i'mma have to try it out.
I got the S out of storage just a couple days ago so I could put all-season tires on (goodyear eagle F1 all-seasons), and get it aligned. I forgot what a pleasure this car is to drive, and with the recent warm weather melting everything plus some light rain we've had - the roads have been clear (normal pot-holes everywhere however).
I suppose I should have checked the weather however. woke up to this:

cleanest (minus the rims) snow covered S you'll find!

will post a report on how my trial of the installation goes however. Thank again everyone for the help. Kamron - if i think i might need a had I'll give you a ring!
