That's nasty.
I almost hit a coyote last night. Glad I didn't need to swerve or anything, just hit the brakes. Can't believe, as bad as that car looks, that they apparently walked away!

Oh yeah....this car of ours can take a real bad beating and still keep the occupants safe. There are numerous threads on this site where the car has rolled many times, ending upside down on the roll-hoops and the windshield frame. The driver/passengers simply unbuckle themselves and fall out fo the car with minor cuts and bruises.

man.. that's a tough call, to avoid 'em or just to hit 'em. cuz a lotta times, avoiding them causes accidents... when i see cats/dogs/rabbits, i just slam on the brakes, hold on and HIT 'em. deers, that's a whole nother story.
that said. god bless 'em, cuz i thought this was gonna be a motorcycle 'spill'

most trained/experienced drivers will tell you to hit the animal every time.
you are much less likely to roll if you have a head on collision with an animal, you leave the road/swerve and yer kinda rolling the dice.
Do any of you remember that story about two s2k's racing in Philly, like both of them died a couple times over. (they were at -3 lives remaining of 1 that they started with)

If you've never hit a deer before, I'd suggest doing what you can to avoid hitting a deer. In anycase, hitting a deer or veering off and hitting some trees, you'll still be in a one-car collision.
Hitting a deer has so many other possible outcomes, it's not even funny. There are sites dedicated to minimizing injury and/or the chance of death when colliding with a deer, horse, elk, moose, bison, etc.
However, if you see a duck, cat, rat, small dog, mouse, racoon, gerbil, squirrel, mongoose, pigeon, etc., I say hit the gas and maul it. If it's a medium to large dog, do all to avoid it.

All this talk sure is making me hungry.
Another reason I would hit a deer would be because I dont want a car that has had major damage. I would prefer the insurance company totalled it for the same reason that I dont use lemon air fresheners in my car.
