Default Chicago land shops

Hey all, I've had my s2k for over a week or so now and im not really a fan of my local honda dealer. Whats a good dealership or mechanic shop that knows the ins and outs of our S2Ks to do regular maintenance on em around the Chicago land area...im located in a south suburb of Chicago, specifically the orland/tinley park area. I know DIY is always the best option but I dont have the knowledge nor time to do so!

Thanks!

King is in Wisconsin. i, in general, over the last 20 years, have had very very limited success with shops in the area. bad experiences with tuning, installation, and time to complete the labor. i would take advantage of the deals on tools at Sears (starting friday) and pick up a good mechanics set and a good floor jack from harbor freight and get the maintenance manual and do most of it yourself. car is reasonably straight forward to work on as far as maintenance. big ticket stuff i would have the dealer do. i've been happy with Fletcher Jones downtown. otherwise, chicago is a wasteland of bad shops overall. the coast guys are quite lucky.

I'm going to go ahead and move this into the main Upper MidWest section so more people can provide their input.

Like Harry, I, too, try to do as many things myself as I can, but there are obviously some jobs where it just makes sense to take it to someone else. For those, based upon my personal experience, I would recommend ProFunction (as mentioned previously), GT Motoring (good for buying / installing aftermarket parts, too), or local member Dan whose screen name on the forum is Quivers. GT Motoring and Quivers are both site sponsors and do quality work.

Otherwise, if you're ever looking for a hand for simpler DIY tasks that you might not be comfortable with doing yourself (engine / trans / diff oil changes, sway bar swaps, brake work, suspension swaps, etc.) feel free to post up and I know some local members (myself, if available) would be glad to give you a hand and show you how to do it in the future, too!

Like K1ngfunk mentioned, Regular maintenance stuff isn't to complicated and can be done withing a few hours with the help of local members. It's always a big plus to know the ins and outs of your own car. I have learned everything I know from going to tech days and getting some hands on experience.

As far as more complicated tasks I can vouch for Mikey over at profunction as well. He did my tune, went out of his way to make time for me and help me get together some missing pieces last minute. He will be doing my future build and his prices are by far the best bang for your buck.

^ Yea I have spoken with Greg and they sound like they have a great set up. I called to see if they were able to tune my car but they stay away from that area and I can't blame them. Very helpful and responsive to messages and calls

so Profunction is the local place to get my car tuned? I was considering Suja1 in Carol Stream. What about AMS? I know they are not heavy in the Honda world but I have heard great things. Also if I understand they inherited a few of the guys from Hahn Race Craft when he was still in IL before moving his shop to FL. They are also the closest shop to me but I dont want this to be the deciding factor. WI will be harder to get someone to drive me up when the car is ready.

I don't have any personal experience with AMS, so take this with a grain of salt, but I've since heard that they've tried to move to a far more "exclusive" clientele and won't give you the time of day unless you're bringing in something with goals of 700+ HP.

AMS if you have the money and if they are willing to do what u want them to do, they will be without a doubt the most expensive. I'm not sure of their experience with S2000's or Hondas in general.

Mikey at profunction has a lot of experience with Hondas and with the S2000's. Seemed the most reasonable to me. To me, having someone working on my car that knows the ins, outs and limits of them is a huge deal and great peace of mind. I wouldn't want someone that isn't familiar with the car to be doing work on it imo.

King is a great place too and I know they have done their share of S2000, pretty sure most of the Wisc. guys go to them, but just didn't want to make the drive lol

AMS has plenty of experience with S2000's. There's a few people on staff that were apart of the beginning of the modern Honda game here in Chicago.

They aren't the MOST expensive...depending on what you want done, King is more expensive...at other times, Profunction is more expensive. I've used both AMS and King in the past; seeing a couple of issues with friends of mine on their S2000's, I personally wouldn't take my car to them. EVERY shop has had their issues in the course of doing business, so I'm not calling any one shop out....I just know where I will take my car and where I won't.

Taking all these things into consideration, I'd highly recommend taking your S2000 to Quivers for maintnenance and repair. He's in Naperville (on the border of Plainfield). He works ONLY on S2000's and M3's. He's slowly and surely getting to be a great local resource for installing tuning parts too. If you were in the northern 'burbs, I'd recommend GT Motoring.
