Buying a Used Car from a Private Party in Illinois
For those who've bought a used car from a private party in Illinois, any tips/advice?
Do I just hand over a cashier's check and make sure the seller signs over the title to me?

i usually have a bill of sale made too. helps if you get pulled over. ask the seller to write that the car was purchased for less then $15,000 also. registering it this way saves you about $500.

yes you can just sign the check over to him. In any case youre not happy, you can always put a stop payment on the check. Customer reserve the right to stop that check within 24 hours. I dont recommend you doing that, just make sure everything is good before handing your cashiers check to the seller. in addition to this, since he's there with you, just simply go to the nearest currency exchange and get the title change. Those people at currency exchange can tell you exactly what to do and where to sign and all that just in case you dont any experience on this scenario.

Actually you can download a generic bill of sale for cars.....just search on google. I think autotrader may have on also.
IF you are taking a loan out, you most probably will need to present a bill of sale to the bank before they will issue you the check. That's what I had to do with my bank.
Make sure he has title in hand and if there was a lean on the title, there should be a lean holder clear stamp on it. If he owned the car outright, and only has his name on it then you are in great shape. Once he signs the title over and you give him the check, and have the the bill of sale( make copies) with both signatures ............you are ready to take the car to the DMV for titling.

i think if you go to office max they have a bill of sale for about $5. just buy one and make copies for the future. Anyways make sure the seller gives you everything, i was only given one key, kinda make me worried since mine is an 05????had to go to honda and spend around $500 to redo all the codes and get another spare. You should get 3 keys i believe.
