I used to live over by Howard and Sheridan, and it was not a comforting place to be. I used to take the train everyday and get off at the Howard L at 3-4 o'clock in the A.M. coming home from the House Of Blues and they were no good times. But I think that the border of Evanston and Chicago (Howard St.) is getting alot better.

 

The howard Evanston area is still not the greatest area when it comes to personal safety. It is also ver out of the way when it comes to transportation by car and only 1 L line coming downtown. I recommand that if you look to move into the city for what the City has to offer to you personally, make a list and move near those things. In the city a couple of blocks can make all the difference in the world when it comes to services to safety. Best way to tell, drive by the area on a friday or saturday night late and see what goes on in the area.

I went over to check out the Evanston neighborhood, near Howard. It didn't look that good, definitely, but it wasn't really that bad.

Lots of new condo conversions there, thought I'm not sure if it's a good thing. On the one hand, it seems like the neighborhood is getting better, on the other hand, I don't want the place to be saturated with new developments.

I also drove up north to the next purple line station on Oakton, and that area seems a lot safer than Howard.

Anyway, Evanston seems great so far, but I am going to start looking else where as well now. My boss suggested Ravenwood, around the brown line, someone suggested Edgewater, and around the Loyola area.

Yet someone else recommended Bridgeport, but I think that will be beyond my price range.

I'm not sure how much space you are looking for, that definitley makes a difference. but consider along the lake fron t high rise developements from Addison north to Loyola. You can get in a one Bedroom (700- 850 square feet) for around 150k. and 2 bedroom (1100 to 1400 square feet) for around the 230K. range. But the assesments in these you have to be careful of and also look for special assesments and reservs, plus parking charges. They are some of teh best deals around Chicago especially close to the lake and LSD to go downtown, but hard to get to expressways. I lived in one for 10 year it was great.

 

Evanston is a nice neighborhood. I go up there every week. Bridgeport has some decent houses but the residents there aren't too friendly....it's not too expensive.
