Default Anyone willing to help install steering rack?

Hey guys,

I have quite a bit of play in the center of my steering and the dealership has failed at helping me remedy this.

My car has almost 120k miles on it and Im seriously considering installing a new rack. Im sure the dealership is going to want quite a hefty sum to handle this. They charged me almost a grand to do a trans removal/instsall.

Anyone here have the tools and know how, who is interested in helping? I can bring a TON of beer and or compensate you monetarily.

I love doing my own wrenching, however I dont have the tools here at college, nor a garage in which to do the work.

Thanks a ton!

Nic

Do you have another rack already? If not, I'll have an AP2 unit available by the end of this week; it has 20k miles on it....still fairly new.

That would be absolutely fantastic. I can drive to you.

Lude - I have a line on a super low mileage AP1 rack. Id like to keep things pretty stock.

As a side note, the reason Im replacing the rack is a combination of the play, and that I believe mine is bent.

My car demonstrates more resistance and a MUCH sharper turn-in to the left than it does to the right.

When turning to the right, the wheel moves about an inch before anything happens. When turning left, the car immediately starts turning the moment I touch the wheel.

Could this be related to anything other than the rack? Ive had half a dozen alignments performed. They seem to improve the handling slightly each time, but nothing seems to completely remedy the problem.

The car has 118k miles and I am the 3rd owner. I have NO idea of the driving habits of the previous owners.

I can give it a once over as well if you bring it to the shop.

Let me know, we are pretty open this week.

Sounds like a bent control arm to me; not to say that the rack could be messed up.

How could an arm be bent? Wouldnt that be pretty obvious to look at?

It still aligns to spec just fine. Im at a loss here.

Yeah it should be obvious if it were bent as it would align kind of goofy.

Did you ever hit anything substantial?

Did the car always feel like this? Or just start since you got it?

As far as I can remember the car has always felt like this.

The steering also feels much heavier to the left than to the right (this is what makes me think the rack is bent). That combined with the uneven turn in makes the car kinda scary to drive.

Any vibrating or wobbling at high speeds?

Ball joints are for sure all good?

Inner Tie rods good?

Outer Tie rods good?

Any ladies in the passenger seat?
