2nd gear ** crRRRRRunch **
ugh. drove to GRR yesterday, did about 600 miles total... the 2nd gear synchros do NOT like me man... the new-to-me car only has 26K mi. i grinded the 1-2 shift hard 4 times yesterday. don't know when the PO changed the tranny fluid (or if he did at all), don't know what fluid the tranny has....
wtf are my options as the car's completely out of warranty already (by 5months, tho mileage is way under). i did a precursory search in "Under the hood" forum and just read about a buncha peeps taking the cars into the dealership...

I remember that its common when the tranny is cold. Also, under hard acceleration it is common. I have had that happen previously but 4 times in one day is a bit too much. I guess you can take it to the dealer and get it checked.

For future reference, whenever I buy a used car the first thing I do is change all the fluids. That way I KNOW the last time the fluids were changed and what was used.
If I were in your shoes, I would change the fluid and use the Honda MTF. If it solves your problem you are done. If not, then I would change it out to GM Syncomesh fluid (even if it's only a week between fluid changes.) If it still doesn't solve the problem, then post back up and we can go from there.

While you are at it, change the engine oil and the diff fluid too.
I would also inspect the clutch fluid. For some reason the S2000 seems to burn up clutch fluid. Might as well inspect the brakes and brake fluid while it's up in the air too.

I've read about the "GM Syncomesh", but hv been using Redline *** for the Miata so... thanks for the reassurance. what about the diff oil?
The motor oil is due at 27,500 .. I'll do Mobil1 10W30 change then.
will get everyone's 3rd/4th opinion before letting dealership rape me a new hole...

80% of ALL of these jobs done at the same time is spent jacking the car up. Once it's up each of these is very, VERY easy to do. I would do the oil change 1,500mi early if the car is already up on jack stands.

^ ehh.. thanks (tho didn't need all the elementary pictorials on draining bodily fluid... )
just wanted to know what everyone's using for diff oil. considering i see Mob1 75w90 in those pix, i think i'll just use up the rest of my Redline 75w90
not going to change my oil early just to avoid jacking up the car. w/ the price of crude (and motor oil) the level they're at, i'll let it run another 1500 miles <end of cheapbastardness>

Almasol DIFF fluid
GM Synromesh FM
Valvoline Syn DOT3
Most everyone with an S2000 has been through the 2nd gear grind issue.
Once was enough for me, changed to Honda MTF, within a month it was getting notchy, went to GM Syncromesh and never has an issue again.
Almasol diff fluid is supposed to be indestructable, I put it in at neary 15k miles.
If you have been hard on the car, and have many miles on it's probably not going to protect you at this point, but like Pete said, you have to be proactive. Should have done it from day one namely if you drive hard.
