I'd be up for running a car if someone could make us a cage for free (or cheap). Safety stuff doesn't factor into the $500, but I don't know how much money I would want to invest in a 92 SHO or something
To stay closer to topic though...anyone else want to go?

Stay away from the SHO. They apparently always die.
Some friends and I have entertained this for a bit. We even helped the organizers (sort of) by reporting my friend's Miata lap times / speeds from MAM as they wanted to see if that track would stay within their self imposed limits.
Don't look for a performer. Look for something simple, reliable, and easy to service.
Either that, or way wacky fun that nobody would expect (like a '72 El Camino).

Good points Steve. When I entertained the idea I found a $400 Toyota Cressida which seemed like it would be fun since it was essentially a 4 door 2nd gen (?) Supra. I was thinking junkyard turbo and I'd be set. But reliability does sound like it would be better...and I don't know how reliable a turbo'd 80's cressida would be
Edit: Did a quick search on craigslist for cars under $500. Besides advertisements for easy financing, cars that are listed as $12 when they mean $12,000, car parts posted by people that don't know there's an entire section for that, I've found a couple of acura legends, a ford escort gt, and a ford probe. Not too shabby

Nice to hear from you Steve!
There was a good article in a recent GRM about the lemons wasn't there? I can't remember how long ago. I think searching would have to encompass far greater media than just internet though. A paper listing might.... I've seen all sorts of rust-buckets in there.
I don't know where to look for cage building, but like I mentioned, if enough people are in on this, the cost per-person shouldn't be that bad.

Yeah, you too. I hope the interior project is done, or in a good state and you're happy with it.
You're absolutely right about the GRM article. In fact, my SHO commentary was a summary of an opinion from one of the founders of LeMons who just completely blasted the whole SHO community.
He said something to the effect of 'SHO's look good on paper, but the ALWAYS blow up...ALWAYS. And the logical thing to all SHO owners seems to be to go find another engine....to blow up. ALWAYS' . Or something like that.

Yeah, the interior is done...99.999% anyway.

The SHO always blows up? I thought the Yamaha engines were supposed to be good?....unless I'm getting mixed up with another car....or I could be just plain out of my mind too....
What about an old BMW 3 series? Those things are supposed to have very good engines.

The SHOs made good power and was highly strung (which this community would like). I guess durability just wasn't it's thing.

I might be in for spectating. Depends on whether I can get out for an autocross this weekend or not. If not, I already told my wife to get ready to spend a little time with some of her friends in MI, while I go watch the race for a while...
If folks are going on Saturday, post up when/where to meet and perhaps we can meet up and enjoy the race.
