Yeah, I've never been to the charity preview, but it looks pretty cool on TV, and I've heard from other people that have attended that it is pretty sweet. My secretary is going to the charity preview this year. I gotta admit, I'm a little jealous.
I'm guessing that if I purchased charity preview tickets on or prior to December 31, 2011, then I could deduct the donation portion $240 on my taxes for tax year 2011. I'd rather do that than have to wait an entire year if it were a 2012 deduction. I've got to confirm that.

That would be really cool especially since it can get busy when the show is open to the public... but, having said that, I think I will stick with my current plan of going on the 14th. I'm staying near Greektown so I can enjoy a Friday night out as well

Yeah, I can throw out a couple suggestions out there off the top of my head. I'll also check with Breanne, and see what she thinks.
1. Cliff Bells, http://www.cliffbells.com/ Close enough to a people mover stop that you shouldn't have to drive from your hotel. Good choice if you can dig some good Detroit Jazz.
2. Detroit Beer Company, http://www.detroitbeerco.com/ They've got three stores, one of them is in Royal Oak and is one of our regular restaurants. The Detroit one is good too. Also very near a people mover stop.
3. If you want to separate the food from the drinking, then you can't go wrong with some greek food in greektown (I preferred Olympia until it closed, I guess Pegasus is my go to place now), followed by some drunk irish tunes at The Old Shillelagh (also right there in greektown). http://pegasustavernas.com/ http://www.oldshillelagh.com/ Both of these are right by your hotel.
4. Some other popular places in Detroit that are further away, and thus would require a short drive, might include Traffic Jam and Snug (Michigan's first brew pub), Xoci's (popular mexican food in mexican village), Slows (best ribs and soul food in the city).
