wrong diff oil?
a friend of mine has had his 02 s2000 with 110k into honda for engine, gearbox and diff oil change. they had put some castrol 75/90 into the diff but wasnt the hypoid stuff. 500 miles later his diff is making a hell of a whiring noise, dropped the oil out and it was black and metal filings all over magnetic sump plug. He has had it into honda and they say diff is buggered! so am i right in thinking if they had put the hypoid oil in it would have been fine? the diff was fine before this oil change...

Yep, that's what I'd say - FWIW there is a diff in the For Sale section if that helps your mate.

This seems to be a common phenomenon.
The oil should be marked EP (extreme pressure) and has sulphur additives to withstand the shearing forces of the 90° gearset. Which is why it smells unpleasant.

£4000 for a new one through honda apparently !! i think they would sooner loose a good customer, i dont think my mate is going to kick up a fuss as he gets their part ex cars cheap to sell on so doesnt want to rock the boat
