Would you let potential buyers test drive your car
Ive never sold a car privately to anyone before and have heard differing opinions on this. So if you were to sell your car privately would you?
1) Allow any potential buyer to test drive the car(assuming they are insured elsewhere, meaning the car would be 3rd party only)
2) Only allow them to drive if were fully insured for the test drive only.
3) Allow them to sit in the passenger seat while you take them for a demonstration drive.
Thanks

depends what car it was
depends what they turned up in
depends how much I knew about them
depends on the look of them
I've given some people the keys to expensive cars and told them to let me know when they are back (subject to them leaving their car and keys and agreement to 'you bend it, you mend it')
otoh I've told people a car is sold when they've turned up because I didn't like the look of them
same as on here - there are people who have driven my M5 and other cars without any questions from me about insurance
there are rather more who I expect to die or be seriously injured in a car crash before I let them drive one of my cars
the more restrictions you apply, the more potential customers you put off
if you judge it right, it gives the potential purchaser great confidence in you as a seller

3) only.
This is a driver's car. But,
the buyer should expect a good test ride.
He/she can feel what goes on in an S2000 as a passenger.
Provide a few emergency stops, red-line changes and plenty of VTEC.
He/she should keep an eye on the exhaust while all this is going on, and idle before/after exhaust smoke.
edit: then there's the psychology. Gad puts it very well

On the other hand, if I was told that I could only be a passenger in a car I wanted to buy, there is no way I'd even consider parting with the cash.
Either I drive it myself (with the owner) or I walk.

I have let a couple of people on here drive my car but only because they have one themselves and I trust their driving. I really don't like being a passenger in it though.
As for potential buyers - like others have said I would only let them if their insurance covered them fully comp and even then I would probably take a judgement call. We know how easily the car can bite even when you've driven it for years so I wouldn't trust anyone who wasn't used to an S.
