I've always wondered what mods people class as acceptable on a "classic car". I've tried to keep mine in as tip top condition as I can, but I like some creature comforts and have added heated seats, Robins hood liner and steering wheel, and a new DAB aerial and DAB head unit. I still have the original items.

Would that class as "lightly modified" or not?

tbh you get lots of replacement carbs on loads of classics because the original ones weren't up to the job and that is generally accepted by all but the most hardcore purists. I know the S2000 isn't like that as it was perfect from the factory but I'm not even sure an AEM v2 intake would drop the value significantly.

Agree with chuck on the more original a car is the more sort after it will be moving forward.
For example i was really supprised by how many people were laughing at putting an original cassette stereo back in the recent wheeler dealers, am i the only one who thought that was a good idea? In the future things like that will undoubtedly be on any buyers check list

IMHO the trick is to do small mods that are easily reversible and make sure you keep the original bits

I follow this rule also - mod lightly and keep oem parts if you're looking for appreciation in value

They were laughing because that particular car would have come with a CD player as standard.

They already are collectable - to a 'Scrapyard' - the way they rust/rot away and get written-off scrappies are really keen for them!

I bought my S2000 used on the basis that it was an original car. Yeah it had aftermarket wheels but those went to a good home within weeks of the car coming home.

I was just checking advertised prices for the S2000 here in Ohio via Autotrader and there are used seemingly unmodified (or returned to stock or near stock) S2000s with low mines advertised for nearly the price they sold for new. A couple over $30,000 for last generation AP2/DBW cars and some early AP1s over $20,000. Admittedly inflation is at work but based on asking prices low mileage unmodified cars are retaining their value. I did note that some of these cars have been on the market for 3 or 4 months so perhaps the asking prices are too high.

Everything points towards the s2000 being a car that will rise in value and become collectable but if you look at other cars like the ford rs, Audi quattro turbo etc they are very dependent on low mileage and originality and are 30 years old.
I think you have to use it and enjoy it!

It was even mentioned in "The Week" last week as an appreciating classic
