I would like to see Honda really push the envelope with an S replacement - aluminium, composites and a hybrid power train.

I agree, I think Honda' are the type of company that does things because they CAN not because they SHOULD, look at the advances in robotics they have made with ASIMO.

So where's the return on investment there? Awful lot of money to spend on something that is just a 'marketing toy'.

Just because newer designs come along (ie Z4) this does not make an older, but excellent design redundant. The S2000 is a car that was clealry ahead of its time - I personally think that it holds its own against the 'new' competition, it just feels right in so many ways.

I compared the S to the Z4 and new TT and Merc SLK and bought the Honda in preference. Whilst all of the other models do 'something' better, none of them were as convincing as the S overall.

3 months of ownership and I am more convinced than ever that I bought the right car - I enjoy it more each day

If BMW cannot beat the S with a brand new design such as the Z4, then it's not for Honda to raise the bar!

The car is still giving cars like the Z4/SLK/Boxster a run for their money. It's still competative to it's peers and a healthy chunk of cash cheaper so an outstanding car for something that's essentially 8 years old.

That being said it's beginning to drop behind the curve now. The competion is getting faster and even hot hatches are reaching a point of being comparable, at least in a straight line. Honda doesn't have a follow on in the wings yet either so, unless it's a Skunk Works special, then it'll be a gonner in the not too distant future.

One advantage though. Was reading my dads Classic and Sports car the other day. #1 future classic was the S2000. Build quality so good it'll last for ages, a stunning engine, comparatively rare and an owner base so enthusiastic we border on fanatical. It'll be around forever at least as a classic.

One of my best friends bought an 05 boxster at the same time I bought my S, it cost him twice as much, he thinks my car is awesome and thinks his is boring and slow!

IMO its starting to show its age, it still is remarkable for its age. But as you say honda has fallen behind the competition as the years have past.

Still love it though.

An 8 year old design
I'm not so sure it has really fallen behind the competition, which is really the 2.5 Z4 and the 2.0 TT roadster. The Boxster isn't really a competitor as it costs 20% more than the S2000 (and that's before options), similar the SLK (unless you want a 200K which is really, really slow)

The new TT has just added things like aluminium panels (on the S since 99) and only now has similar performance, 8 years later. It's still FWD of course.

Does a 2.5 Z4 really offer a better ownership experience than an S2000, even though it's 2% cheaper (again before options)?

Hot hatches will more than keep up with all of the 'competition' in the traffic light Grand Prix. But it's not really about that unless you're some spotty 24 year old still living with your parents...

The fact that the Boxster even gets mentioned in relation to competing with the S2000 - which it so often does based on conversations I have with colleagues and so forth - speaks volumes.

I saw a brand spanking new Boxster S yesterday and it looks so refined inside. All sorts of gadgets and gizmos. But that kind of spec costs a fortune! You're well over the
