Being somebody who has invested a lot of money on my home hifi, more than the cost on my new S2k, I would say in home hifi terms the source component is always the first place to start to upgrade your system. You can upgrade your speakers all day long, you are still getting the same source signal!!!
I however will not be spending a lot of money on a car hifi as the the noise intrusion from road/wind etc means you are loosing 60%/70% of the music.
I will however change my head unit soley to be able to connect my ipod easily and control through dash controls, I do not want a HU that looks like a council house at christmas with flashing lights all over it, any recommendations for a simple, classy looking head unit with out all the flashy lights fuss??

As someone else who's home sound system cost more than S2000, I can vouch for its sound quality, the limitations of being in an open-topped car notwithstanding.

The more expensive Pioneer units usually look and sound pretty good too

As someone who takes his hifi rather seriously - no disclosure of costs SHMB may read this - i propose the following:
1. ditch the speakers replace with decent components (pioneer makes a pair that fits)
2. decent HU without getting ott
3. power amp. Any power amp will be better than the HU amp whatever what they claim.

Finally decided to upgrade headunit after having the S for 5 1/5 years
Was never particularly bothered (had already changed speakers which made a BIG difference), but after having an epi over the weekend trying to get the Ipod to play I decided I wanted an integrated system.
Will either be the IDA-X305 or a 2nd hand X100 (but think the new will win )
