Who's had an oil filter pop off or other failure?
This isn't to prove a point to Hypersonik, I think it would be interesting to get the real numbers together on this subject.
So if YOU have had one go bandy, post up some info.
Views on whether it was fitment or not, and wether your engine went bang would be useful.
If it was a non OEM then list the make.
This is not a common problem, but quite a few have had it and it's quite nasty.
The fact that J's and others make a holder for the filter says a lot to me too!

theres a 2 options missing 5 Always use OEM and no problems. 6 always used after market with no problems.
I fall into the always used OEM and never had a problem categry and cant see the point when the filters are so cheep to buy from honda
be interested to see the finl results though!

a guy I know in US had an non honda one come off and set his engine on fire on an Ap2
apparently the only ones you should use are part number PCx-something
I went to my local dealer they gave me a standard honda filter thats smaller than the PCX
its not fallen off yet

I had an OEM one leak on a trackday. It was about 2 weeks after I fitted it too, and for those 2 weeks I'd been driving around happily VTEC'ing away with no issues. But track use is something else.
I think it was fitting. What I did was start putting it on by hand up to the point where it was starting to tighten up, then I thought "hang on - there's all these hysterical threads on the forum I'd better pay attention to the numbers to make sure I get it tight enough". So I loosened it right off, and did it again trying to pay attention (but I've never worked out where you're meant to start counting) so just did it with a wrench.
It was pleanty tight enough too, and the filter didn't look obviously damaged when I took it off. But it was leaking oil around the seal when fitted. Fortunately I only lost about 1/2 a litre before somebody told me.
So I think doing it twice is what caused the problem, for which I blame all of you. Now I don't look at the numbers, I just do it by hand, then grab the wrench and do another 1/8th of a turn. Never had any problem since, and I've changed it 4 or 5 times.
I went to the Ring shortly after that experience, and I took three spare oil filters with me. Paranoia?

Remember to smear oil on the seal to ease it on the seat when tightening.
