Even more lucky that you did not leave it somewhere 'high' in the engine bay and then wreck the bonnet when you closed it. Few things enhance a bonnet more than a good oil filler cap shaped 'muppet' bump.

Be warned.................I have seen an engine total'd because the wit didn't put the cap back on then drove for a VERY long time with it off...........drained the engine of oil and caused it to seize

I left a front headlamp bulb in the engine bay of the Jag for Months.
Only when I was showing my mate the engine did I notice it.
