Default Whining noise?

Hi all

I've been getting a very noticeable whine from my 2009 S2000 recently. Only noticeable when the roof is up (no wind noise)

I dropped it off at the Honda dealer this morning as I have an extended warranty. They have just called me now to say the technician thinks it's the end bearing in the gearbox.......

They want to strip it down and send it off to a gearbox specialist.

Is this something anyone has heard of before?

I've had the car for almost 6 years and until now had no real issues.

Cheers

Where is the noise coming from? Diff/clutch areas?

I get a whirring noise when the clutch pedal is out and I'm in neutral. Does the sound stop when you press the clutch pedal in?

Do you have a video of noise? I've had it on an S2000 before, nice thread here explaining what needs doing. Mainly a labour cost, doesn't seem to cause any damage though.

Are you sure it isn't the wife?

Primary and secondary input shaft bearings are well known issue. Does it sound like it's whirring on the overrun just under the gear lever area?

Input shaft bearing. I had it on my integra and it made the noise for 3 years and then after getting the bearings replaced it made it abit quieter but not massively. Its one of those things that if its starts grinding or rumbling then worry about it but if its not massively loud then i would just put up with it and change the gearbox oil often and check for debris etc.

Mine makes abit of noise but i just ignore it. I know its serviced often and its not got worse.

Same here, although mine was less of a whine and more of an annoying trill buzzing sound...

Just an update on this! Finally got my car back from the Honda garage. Even though I felt the whine was being caused by a faulty diff, they decided to strip the gearbox and send to a specialist. The specialist reported 2 worn end bearings and replaced them.

Car back and surprise surprise the whine is exactly the same as before (if not worse). The technician is now agreeing that it's most likely a diff issue.

Car booked back in next week.

At least I've got my warranty.

Such a shame, I've owned the car for 6 years and other than minor niggles it's been pretty faultless until now.
