Thumbs up When To check Oil

Hi All
This might seem silly I want to check the oil cold or warm?

I read the manual that you check it when its warm is this when its at normal running temperature? also I persume once its been running you have to leave it to rest for a bit how long do people do this?

Funny you should post this as I'm just about to pop outside and check mine.

I'm sure you're going to open a whole can of worms with this topic, but I tend to check mine after I've been for a drive. I usually leave it about 10 minutes or so after stopping and then check the oil level.

I have used to check mine 5-10 minutes after stopping and then again the next morning when dead cold. There was never any difference bigger than half an X on the stick.
Now I just check it once a week when I remember whether it’s hot or cold.

I check mine cold. I couldn't figure out what I was looking for when checking it warm/hot so cold suits me best.

After I fill up for me as forecourts are usually flat/level and it gives 10 minutes for the oil to settle.

There is no answer that everyone agrees on. It depends on your engineering/maintenance perspective.

So you weren't checking it routinely before?

I always check mine when it's cold, so first thing in the morning for just before I drive home form work.

As loftust said not everyone will agree on this, but I think we all would agree that checking it weekly/bi-weekly is an excellent idea
