I wait ti mine is cold and on level ground when the oil has had a chance to settle

you don't want to overfill it

with Zero.

Either check it before you start the car in the morning, or leave it stand for at least a couple of hours after a run so that the oil drains back into the sump. I'm told it can take a while for the oil in the engine to drain back down after running, so if you check the level before it has had a chance to do so, you'll get an artificially high reading.

Also as the reading can be different on each side of the dipstick use the lowest reading. Each mark on the stick = 100ml of oil

In the run in period check the oil level at least once a week, oil gets used very quickly in VTEC...... so more VTEC = more checks!.

Now that mine is run in (8000 miles) its using oil more slowly but I still check every few hundred miles.

No I think I used about the same amount..... I'm near the end of my third litre now (just over 8000 miles..... lots of VTEC)

PL, mineral oil up to 9,000 miles - ideally 10W-30 but 10W-40 or 5W-30 will do fine. After 9,000 miles, synthetic oil - same viscosity.

Halfords do a mineral oil which seems to be used by a lot of people on here (in a burnt orange bottle, IIRC). Mobil 1 seems to be the synthetic oil of choice.

On that subject, I was looking at the price of oil in CostCo yesterday. 0W-40 Mobil 1 is around

Oh I shall print this off and give it to the man who does and then he can decide and get me some...... I have previously used Shell Helux Synthetic something or other!!

Thanks Mark, you are a star as usual
