The wheels will fit; they will rub against the arches on hard bumps

For the front 7.5-8J with an offset range of 50-55.

Rears 8 or 9J ; range 55-65

GOD NO!!! they will sit to far in the arch

my old 18" wheels where
front and rear 8.5j et 45 and i ran a 3 mm spacer all round to make them effectively et 42

my current wheels (yes the pink ones)
front
17 x8 et 34 and i have a 3mm spacer and they fit great

rear
17 x 9 et 36 no spacer and they poke out the arch by about 10mm with 2.2 degre's of camber so a 8j wheel would sit 12mm further in so would fit great.

so a 17 x8 et 36 will fit all round fine

using the website willtheyfit.com and my wheels as a guide

17 x 8.5 et35 will poke out the arch by about 6 mm

to make fit add lots of camber, coilovers and stretched tyres, if your not going for stance no it wont look good

17 x 9.5 et 35 will poke out the arch by about 17mm so no matter what you do will look stupid

I would go with Loon's advice, unless you want your car to handle like sh1t (without a host of other mods) and look questionable

Chris.
or if you want really weak offset and them to sit far inside the arches, IMO they will look terrible,

handling wont be affected at all if anything will be better from a slightly wider track car.

Can you please explain what you mean by "weak offset"?
