What's in a noisy starter motor?
Take one grubby startermotor ( admittedly this isn't the one off my car, it's the spare one i've bought to fit to mine next month) but it's the one that will be going on my car.
Remove the 12mm nut that holds the power cable and remove the 4 long bolts that clamp it all together and you get this..
Those three cogs sit inside this which is what turns the cog that drives the flywheel. Also cleaned and greased the bearing in the base plate and cleaned up the armature as well as the contact points for the bushes.
You can see the wear on the armature where it the starter has been sticking.
I ran a load of degreasant through the gear assembly then regreased it and the 3 cogs on their bearings. Then stripped the contact bushes part out and cleaned that. As you can see, pretty manky.
Once cleaned it looks like this
Refit the cogs and put the dust / grease cap back in place, note the notch to align it. Watch out - there are SHARP edges on this.
The brush plate screws into place with 2 smal cross head screws and the whole thing slots back together, to align the 3 cogs with the shaft of the motor, simply turn the shaft by hand until the cogs slot into place and then replace the 4 long threaded bolts.
The only good use of a crap tabloid and fittingly, as well as being full of crap, it's also covered in it. That's the solid bits that came out, i must have rinsed 3 times as much out with the degreasant, I assume it's just dried dust, electrical bush material and other rubbish.
When i get them changed over, I will clean my original one up and compare the photos but I suspect it will be a LOT worse.

From the man who says of his car "I wouldn't say it's been loved"! It has Fester, just from the inside outwards.
I wish more people would take the time to photograph these jobs and set them out in this how-to guide format, I find them so helpful (thanks).
(Run out out beer and onto the Rioja, I note )

You can get a new bush holder but not sure if it comes with new bushes or not - a recon one is the way to go I think but this being one of the common things people complain about, I thought i'd have a look inside and see what all the fuss was about
Will see if it works in a couple of weeks time haha

6 months on and NO noise at all. Conclusion is it's worth doing

Yep - dirt and dust and lack of grease causes the starter solenoid to stick out rather than retract after starting the engine which is what gives you that god awful noise.

If it's off the car and you want it cleaning up - by all means pop round with it
