Default What's this noise?

I've got a slight clanking noise coming from my engine and wondered if anyone hears it on their S2000 or if anyone has heard a similar noise before. It's an irregular, fairly quiet 'clanking' noise that rises and falls in speed with rpm, I'd guess about 8ish Hz at tickover, but it isn't a regular noise (ie not with every rotation). Sort of "ka ka ka ka.....ka ka.....ka ......ka ka.....ka ka ka ka ka". It isn't always apparent, but does generally seem to be there more often when the engine is cold. It's definitely not TCT noise, as I know what that sounds like and I've got a new Ballade Sports TCT fitted (and the guides etc aren't that old either). I thought it might be a pull bearing, but I've replaced the only one that felt a little worn (tensioner). My thoughts are either TADTS, oil pump or something more nasty?

I've tried to capture it on video:

Any help greatly appreciated.

Just a characteristic of the engine. Probably down to the fact they're forged internals and once warm they expand and take up the "Slack" so to speak.

Both my old 01 engine and current 05 engine do the same thing.

Cheers for that. Any other concurrence or otherwise, anyone?

At work pressently so can't listed to video, but it sounds like it could be the same noise as my car makes, if it does it more cold that hot then I reckon it's just good old fashioned piston slap. Nothing to worry about.

2 TADTSs, that's what I like! Tozerman, if you wouldn't mind listening when you have a moment away from work, it would be appreciated. Maybe I've quietened my engine to the point I can now hear things I couldn't before!

I had what I thought was piston slap on cold starts and ended up being a loose substrate in the catalyst - that was quite a "clacky" sound. Also there was hardly any play in my idler pulley bearing too but when I replaced that I definitely removed one of the rattles that came from the engine bay.

Does it sound like Bob Mortimer's voice?

BenRNBP, I'll have a listen near the cat and see if that's making any noise. Could be an excuse for a Berk HFC!

To diagnose I put a (gloved) hand on mine to support it and take some resonance out - Berk HFC now fitted
