Whilst I think everyone should really know the answer to this, I have to agree with Fletch. The black and white derestriction sign is one of the few signs which hasn't changed since the old black and white road signs way back in the 70's '.....Halt At Major Road Ahead' etc.

I'd much prefer to see the actual limit posted. Just thinking about this though I can see how this could cost a bomb if they have to accurately sign the start and finish of each national limit section depending on whether it's a 60 or 70 limit. It's far easier (and cheaper) I suspect, to just keep the one existing sign and leave the onus of awareness on the driver.

My neighbours keep telling me I'm effluent (that's not quite the same as rich is it?)

It is also scary how many people think that the inside line on a motorway is just for lorries.

Look. My Highway Code says a white circle with a black stripe means 'de-restricted' so there is no limit. The sign is in the code my father gave me, and he had it since 1950.
