I've always had the hope that the roads used the national speed limit sign instead of an absolute number so that the limit could be easily raised to a sensible one, without having to change all the signs.

I'm an idiot.

A few years ago I was shocked to discover my mum genuinely beleived the limit on a dual carriageway was 60

Although I didn't know about the no central reservation thing being only 60 - there's a stretch like that near me on which I regularly floor it

I recall an elderly relative believing that they had to stay in the outside lane on Motorways since the inner two lanes were for lorries.

NSL where there are lamposts is 30Mph unless otherwise stated??? There is no explicit limit stated

Many people drive along the road at 40Mph ...... the daring ones to 47 but some of them do 35

Coming the other way it is the ones that do 40 that never slow down as they hit the 30Mph limit
IIRC there are stretches of road where you cannot be prosecuted for speeding simply because of this kind of confusion. Recently there was a report that a lot of 30mph limits in (I think) suffolk were invalid because the wrong law had been applied to create the limit (which was NSL). The lampost ruling means that some stretches of motorway should be 30mph etc.

I thought the limit was 60 mph.

I'd like to see more signs warning of potential hazards than more about a number.

The road that leads to my home is apparently 60mph but you would be an idiot to drive at anything like that speed for most of its length. Needless to say, there are plenty of idiots about and the locals are as bad, if not worse than, visitors.

It has at least three blind bends and is frequented by walkers and horseriders.

For this reason I tend not to take too much notice of any number limit and prefer to drive according to the conditions whenever I'm out of my area.

People who use the fact they were within a speed limit as some excuse in the event of an accident make me sick.
