I can't lie; 104k and this talk of timing chain replacements is playing on my mind!

You WOULD have nearly changed a normal belt set up twice by now.....

But Mercs with chains have 250k plus miles and not been changed (Dad's car is a prime example of this!). OK they are diesel engines ....

I'm approaching 50k in what will be 9 years soon... It does make the tct noise when cold and uses oil but i'm happy with how she's holding up. The roof is a touch rough round the edges, still original.

A combination of delapidated house, massive commutes (using diesel then train) and penchant or bikes (pedalled and not) kept the mileage down

This may he a stupid post as I'm a newbie, but why does Clarkson rave on about how Honda have never had a VTEC go wrong, but on this thread there is talk of engines dying and being replaced? Clarkson may very well be talking crap, but I thought Honda's were reliable?

What's killing them and how do I prevent this?! I'm on 90k. I don't really have the money for a new engine!

the VTEC mechanism doesn't go wrong.
if you put enough oild in the engine and your oil filter and VTEC's oil filter (kind of metal mesh thing) are not clogged.
usually Honda's engines are quite bulletproof - keep them oiled and cool and they last for long.

Don't know if it still applies buy a while ago Honda claimed they have never had a VTEC unit fail.

But then later engines don't fail either.

Ah but chains don't break.

When I picked up the remains of my old engine from Honda, they told me they'd not seen it before on an S2000, but had seen a few of those 2.2 Accord Diesels with broken camchains.

I think someone (possibly Honda) said that they'd never had a VTEC failure under warranty, and then the "under warranty" bit got dropped, and people took "VTEC failure" to mean "VTEC engine failure", and people went round saying no Honda VTEC engine had ever failed. Which is clearly cobblers and always was.
