I think the hardtop was available as an option from the start.

My 2001 had one from new and I looked at a 2000 car that also had one.

It was easy for me as I wired it into the existing hardtop loom.

that's the conclusion i'm coming to - but I want to be sure the feed to the soft top window in disabled if / when the hard top is on...

I connected the loom via a plug behind the trim in the boot and I disconnect it when I install the hardtop ... and then re-connect when I remove it.

If you ordered a hardtop in the early days, I seem to remember the hardtop kit included a new loom section that covered the rear window. Not sure if that became standard on later cars. My first s2000, was MY2001 and the hardtop install did involve a loom. If you can find the dealer hardtop installation instructions for pre-MY2002 it should include the details and the part number for the loom etc.
