Default What to look out for in 2009 cars?

'just looking at potentially getting another S2k, a couple of years back I remember there being some hoohar about 2009 model cars engines exploding or otherwise having some pretty serious problems. The cause of which was the source of great mystery.

So I'd like to know if I should really avoid getting a 2009, is it going to be a time bomb? If not are there anythings I should be aware of?

Many thanks

It's not 100% clear when the issue started or even exactly what it was, If you wan't the newer spec then obviously MY08 are the same apart from the lack of the GT100. If you don't mind the older wheel design and a slightly softer ride then the MY06-07 would be a good bet.

I prefer the seat leather on the 06-07 which seems to have been a more durable leather than the 08-09s.

I'd go for an 09 if it was cheaper than an 06/07

I bought my 09 2 years ago at 18000 miles and am now on 32000, so far i've had no issues with the engine. However I have had other issues which have all been replaced under my extended warranty such as rear light clusters.

Also had an issue with my clutch which was 'rectified' only 2000 miles ago but has recently started to show again, it grates/ squeeks when depressed, as though you can feel a cable pulling.

Other than that it's a fantastic car, until last month it was a weekend/ warm weather car however we've gone from 3 cars down to 2 and now my girlfriend uses it as her daily driver, for that reason im very very VERY happy that it has VSA and winter tyres on at the moment!

The engine issues that affected a very small number (to my knowledge) has not been identified, or at least in public. The news seems to be that Honda will look after affected owners, however at 4 years old now, without an extended warranty, how long that goodwill lasts is anyones guess.

I had a GT100 (gone but not forgotten) and had no issues and personally loved look of the car. I preferred the alloys to the 06/07, but that's personal taste. The suspension set-up was said to be the 'best yet' by all the motoring hacks. Make of that what you will. Personally, I loved it and had no issues with mine, others did, but the numbers were few and far between. Of course, most of those affected make it known and those unaffected just enjoyed their cars, so you'll read a lot more bad stories than you will good. There is a VERY long thread around with lots of info that will make a good read (if you have a few hours to kill).

You pays your money and makes your choice!

I have family in Cyprus and there is a GT100 for sale out there for 25k EUR!!! Did I flog a collectable for peanuts after all?

Forgot to add, i've lost a fortune! Paid £18000 for it in March 2011 and i'd say it's now worth roughly £11000, so I won't be selling it anytime soon!

I'll be taking out further extended warranty and running it until it dies!

I have an 08 plate, bought 2nd hand at 19k miles and now at 33k and I've had no problems at all. As the guys have said above, there are plenty of happy 08/09 owners, and you'll only hear the horror stories.

I also prefer the revised changes (alloy design etc) but the leather quality on the 08/09 is shocking.

My tips would be - buy from a dealer if possible and get an extended warranty, and spend a lot of time listening to the engine and test driving before you drive.

Go for it!
