Default Warning - SPECS in Scotland

Times 13 July - p20

Scotland has introduced its first SPECS monitored section of road - the A77 Kilmarnock to Ayr. This is a pilot scheme. The road is, I understand, monitored along a 26 mile length!!!!!

That section of road had a recirded 314 accidents, including 15 deaths and 78 serious injuries in five years.

Looks like a fast dual carriageway on the map.

The A77 is renowned as the worst road in Scotland for accidents. I have personally witnessed two on the stretch between Kilmarnock and Glasgow and a good friend nearly lost her leg in another. It's been upgraded north of Kilmarnock to Glasgow (the really bad section) to almost Motorway standard.

It was bad because of the sections of dual carriageway without any central reservation. It scared people silly on it but they still drove at 70mph+ I guess the Kilmarnock <> Ayr section is still a bit dodgy in places.

I can't understand why anyone would ever want to go to Kilmarnock.

I think it's actually the Ayr to Girvan stretch that been SPEC's up.
ie: the dangerous bit that they've left after upgrading the rest of the dangerous bits to full motorway standard.

News Release
New safety camera system, SPECS, takes shape on the A77
Work is progressing on the new high-tech safety camera system designed to help
reduce accidents and casualties on the A77 from Bogend Toll, north of Ayr, to
Ardwell, south of Girvan. Although the system is not due to be operational until mid-
July, the first gantries and cameras are now appearing along the 46 km stretch of the
road.

Bada Bing posted pics of these a while back. Pain in the backside when I go down to Prestwick for golf. Thankfully my Origin warns be whenever I exceed the average speed

The worst part of the A77 was the stretch near Glasgow that had no central reservation, but that's now been replaced by the new M77 extension.

Which I haven't driven on yet. Too much fun driving over the old Eaglesham Moor road. Zero traffic!

There are three sets of Specs cameras from the Tarbolton turn off (before Symington) down to the Dutch House (?) roundabout plus Euan and I came across some on the A77 near Minishant.
