Not sure if you have brake ducts yet,but would look into it if not.

Possibly, I've no idea what condition the shifter ball and cup are so that's the easy bit first.

Yeah I put ducting in (can see that above) knowing they got hot previously so thought that might have helped but as you mentioned obviously the drilled discs are just not up to it!

In that case it sounds like worn engine and trans mounts.

Fingers crossed it is, they didn't look too bad but have done 120k so certainly needing a change.

Thanks, sounds like they could be a good upgrade anyway.

You mention in that thread you found them in the UK, is that still just from hybrid racing?

noodels 04-05-2023 02:15 PM

Never looked into it anymore,some on egay UK £35 > 275704790299 or 274947771574 = £42.90

I've just done the 4th track day in the S2000 at the weekend past, there wasn't much prep or changes before this one. The first was obviously sorting the brakes and getting rid of the cracked discs, these were replaced with plain and cheap blueprint ones:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...08654eea_b.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e9ce2971_b.jpg

I've actually then had the S2000 in daily use whilst I sort a new daily bus so that's given me a bit of a chance to find niggles on the road. The ohlins are still not as amazing as I was expecting however that is probably due to the stiffer springs I have on them, I have them backed off fully now on the damping for road use and they're acceptable but still quite harsh on sharp bumps. I also reduced the preload on the rear springs which has lowered the back end slightly. The drone from the HKS exhaust is also really bad - I would not recommend this exhaust to anyone for road use!

In addition to that I also had a lot of wind noise from the soft top but there was a clear gap at the windscreen, I was about to try slotting the catches to get adjustment there until I seen someone mentioned they swapped the striker plates from one side to the other, sure enough mine were very worn and with them swapped the wind noise is all but gone. I was also finding the clutch had a rough feeling to it through the pedal so set about cleaning the slave cylinder piston end and greasing it all - that has made a massive difference and lightened the action, I also adjusted the pedal to remove the dead travel and now the clutch is much nicer. Noodels suggestion of the detent springs was also done -

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a71c858d_b.jpg

I fitted all of the springs and whilst these don't make a huge difference they do make the shift feel like it needs a little more effort and is more precise because of it, I also need to grease the shifter but I'm waiting on the parts for that. Another minor job was fitting some mesh over the rear brake ducts, I didn't think it would be an issue with stones getting in there but I was very wrong and frequently and a horrible screetching noise... when I could hear it over the exhaust!

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...8edf6730_b.jpg

The biggest change however was getting the track tyres re-balanced again and now finally having no vibration from them! Making the drive to Knockhill much nicer and videos less shakey!.

The trackday was less eventful this time with the car running well, it felt a lot more stable and less nervous this time which may just be down to reducing the rake of car, I certainly had a lot more confidence in it this time anyway, although that may also have been helped by recently being on track in the MX5 as well. I am however happy to say the S2000 is now faster than my old MK1 MX5 round knockhill (finally), I took a good bit of time out the previous best and now happily lapping in low 62's with 62.19 being the fastest. I am on the limits of both the brakes and tyres though, managing to get fade from the pads and overheat the tyres after 5 or 6 laps. I have basically finished off the stoptech sports and have a set of PBS prorace pads to try next. I didn't have any shifting issues this time (other than user error) but was mainly keeping it in 4th down duffus, the first corner, as I think I was overslowing previously. It was a cracking day so even roof down laps were in order.

Final laps of the day and my best lap right at the end:

The next upgrade for the S2K will hopefully be a trailer! Then I can start to make it more track and less road friendly...

Not much has happened with the S2000 since the last trackday as I've been busy playing in my MX5 however I have another trackday booked at the end of September in the S2000 so I was wanting to do a few small jobs before then, the small pile of parts makes the list pretty obvious:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...0cf6eca5_b.jpg

I've read about the potential issues with the valve retainers on the early cars so wanted to change these for the facelift version since miss-shifts are more frequent on track and I didn't want to grenade the engine! The old valve cover was also letting the engine bay down so that needed looking at as well:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...fee47f76_b.jpg

I watched and read numerous guides on this before getting stuck in and stripping the cams etc off was pretty straightforward:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a1f00b8a_b.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...3b9357a9_b.jpg

I went with the rope in the cylinder method to hold the valves, then set about smashing them with the valve retainer removal tool (made by Lisle in the US available from Sealey over here). It worked well for getting the retainers out despite some initial fear of hitting the valves into the cylinder. Once removed none of the retainers were cracked but the difference with the facelift ones can be seen:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...59dcca82_b.jpg

I then tried to use the same tool for re-installing the new retainer and keepers, on the third attempt at the first valve I was successful but on the third attempt on the second valve one of the collets landed in my trainer so it was at that point I went with the safer valve compressor tool which was a lot less stressful!!:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...490fa70b_b.jpg

With them all changed (intake side only) I have a bit more peace of mind when I start "money shifting" at the track. Once all back together I then adjusted the valves to OEM clearance.

Whilst the intake was out I also changed the pulley bearings on the idler and tensioner, the tensioner bearing was very rough and noisy, these were a nice simple swap:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...acefb936_b.jpg

Next it was onto the rough valve cover, I covered it in paint stripper which worked really well and cleaned it back to bare aluminium fairly easily:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...ff5b9bcc_b.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...296abd90_b.jpg

I maybe should've stopped at that stage as I did rush the prep (I hate painting!), I used the VHT wrinkle paint and think the cover wasn't clean enough as it didn't adhere well so I applied it heavier due to that... which led to some runs and then very heavy wrinkling once dry:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...39489641_b.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a1b4c624_b.jpg

It went from wrinkles straight to varicose veins I think!

However once assembled and back on the car it doesn't look too bad and the plug cover hides the worst bit:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e441504b_b.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...cf2e8870_b.jpg

Definitely an improvement over overall:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...001598f0_b.jpg

A slightly nervous start followed but it looks like the timing is all ok as the engine is now running smoother than before although I'm yet to take it for a run.

Before the track day I'll be fitting the PBS prorace pads which I'm hoping will be an improvement over the Stoptech sports I currently have fitted. I also have a tow rig now so some proper track mods can start... or ruining of a perfectly good road car as some may see it!

Mine started out as a decent o3 s2000, now has a rear half cage, supercharger, brembo front brake kit etc etc, it just spirals once you got the bug!
I wish I could trailer mine but that out of my range for time being so its a to and from track driver (very harsh as I keep mine set for track stiffness!)

One thing I will recommend is doing 30mm roll bars front and back, will transform the handling, along with some new 17" wheels that can take 225 front and 255 rear :)

This is very much a long term project and the spiral is well underway! The cage and some more serious track mods will be getting done this winter.

The advan wheels I have are 8.5inch all round so I'll be going for a non staggered setup, either 245 or 255. Waiting to fit them before seeing how the balance is but with it being an early car and already having a thick rear arb I think it will only be the front needed.

Whilst I generally dislike modification for modification's sake (see Ace Café meets) I love it when the modifications are for track cars which are being driven fast, keep it up

Completely agree... and then to contradict myself the next mod was a bit of plastic stuck on for no reason other than looks ...

I don't expect the OEM spoiler does anything for performance but I think it looks a bit better with it added.

The proper track prep before the most reason trackday was meant to just be a change of brake pads, the stoptech sports had been ok performance wise but only lasted 3 trackdays - the first without ducting and a sticking rear caliper too, which explains the condition of the rear pads on one side:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...43c5b9fe_b.jpg

These have been replaced with PBS prorace all round. Typically the change went trouble free until the final rear caliper which refused to wind back, eventually I gave up and stripped it down to find the internal circlip had popped out as it kept doing during assembly, the groove in the aftermarket piston I used seems too shallow so with the trackday only days away I ordered a complete replacement caliper and chucked it on instead:

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9cf5886a_b.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...8bfd123b_b.jpg

The S2000 was then loaded for a nice quiet drive to knockhill instead of being deafened by the HKS drone!

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c9c2401c_b.jpg

The weather for this trackday was much cooler than the last one so I think the car was pulling better and I was getting higher peak speeds on the straights, keeping the roof up maybe also helped that! The tyres were still limiting me though as they would go off after a few laps and just generally didn't feel great. I was also hating not having a proper bucket seat and harness in the car and came away with two bruised knees from bracing myself on the transmission tunnel and door.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9f62865d_b.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...21c0399e_b.jpg

I had more confidence on the brakes too, the PBS pads performed well with no fade, just more melted paint on the wheels. They have good initial bite but then don't have much more stopping power and the car was moving a lot under braking however as above I think the tyres are again the issue, I was getting the ABS kicking in a few times so they're being overpowered by the brakes, the tall OEM size sidewalls of the tyres won't help either.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...4fb8957a_b.jpg

In the end I did take bit more time off my previous best and got down to a 61.62 which is pretty good for a still relatively standard car (a 400bhp evo 8 on road tyres is less than 2 seconds faster). Video of my fastest laps here:

I'm really looking forward to doing some proper track mods before next year and seeing how much faster I can go, plus it just looks too much like a standard car on track at the moment!

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...cbae7b18_b.jpg

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...528e8c01_b.jpg

The plans for this winter are a hardtop, roll bar, bucket seats, proper track tyres and possibly lower final drive then see about getting sub-60 seconds round knockhill next year, it should then be close to being competitive for either Super lap scotland at Knockhill or some sprints & hillclimbs.
