Default VERY dodgy moment yesterday

Decided I wanted to explore a few roads in Wales which I hadn't been on before, particularly around the Brecon Beacons, so planned a route on Sunday afternoon.

Headed off at about 08:30 yesterday morning with temperature at -2 and freezing fog. Worked our way over to Telford on the A5, experiencing a couple of slippery patches on the way, then got onto the M54/A5 to Shrewsbury. Came over the peak of a slight incline doing about 70 to find a couple of policeman running towards us waving frantically to slow down. Oops - too late - total loss of grip for about ten seconds as we hit a massive patch of ice There were about eight other cars that had bounced off the central reservation or just gone off the motorway to the left, with varying levels of damage. Just managed to keep the car under control and slow down enough. Phew.

Got to the end of the road to find the police had closed the road completely in both directions.

Decided to come home and attempt the Brecon Beacons in better weather!!

Why the hell were you going 70mph in -2 degrees on roads youve never driven on on a blind peak?

You my friend are one ballsy guy!

The road in question is a dual carriageway (westbound from Telford to Shrewsbury where the M54 blends into the A5) It's reasonably straight and other traffic (although light) was doing similar speed. Up until that point the road had been fine; don't know why that particular stretch was so treacherous.

Was hoping to attempt the Brecon Beacons again on New Years Day but it's looking well dodgy again.

70 MPH in sub zero temperatures!?

Insane.

I drove last Wednesday on the A38, from Plymouth to Newport and the road from Buckfastleigh to Exeter was pure Ice. I must of driven past at least 20 cars/vans that had variuos front end/side impacts. My speed didn't go above 35. I was still amazed and how many idiots were driving like it was summer. THat was in the 'lude as well. Sod taking the 'S' out in this weather!

As for the Breacon Beacons, unless you've driven them before, I'd say that attempting them at the moment (especially as I bet most of the roads up there are untreated) is borderline suicide. Those roads can be dodgy enough in the warm!

We went the other way but Somerset to Plymouth.
Car on its roof, fresh on the A38 near the old racecourse / heli flying field.
Got out of the car in Southway and went on arse
